Prefects' Body

The Richmond College Prefects' Body, established between 1896 and 1898 by Rev.J.H. Darrell, is recognized as the oldest Prefects' Body in Sri Lanka. Comprising both Sub-Prefects and Prefects, it serves as a pillar of discipline, tradition, and service within the College.

Each year, new Sub-Prefects are selected from among the Advanced Level students through a structured application and interview process. These appointments are formally announced during the First Main Assembly of the academic year. On this occasion, the newly appointed Sub-Prefects assume office, while Sub-Prefects from the previous term who have met the required criteria are elevated to the rank of Prefect.

The same assembly also marks the official appointments of the Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Secretary, and Assistant Treasurer of the Prefects' Body. The most significant moment of the assembly is the announcement of the Senior (Head) Prefect, a highly respected position traditionally acknowledged by the entire academic staff rising in unison to honor the responsibility vested in the role.

One of the most distinctive features of the Richmond College Prefects' Body is its independent leadership structure. The body functions autonomously, with the Principal serving as the Master-in-Charge, operating parallel to the College Management Committee. Uniquely, Richmond does not appoint a Head Prefect; instead, leadership is vested in the Senior Prefect. Additionally, access to the Prefects' Room and participation in the Prefects' Conference are strictly reserved for members of the Prefects' Body and the Principal.

Prefects play an integral role in the organization and execution of all major college events, including the Lovers' Quarrel, Founders' Day, Prize Giving, and many more. Their contributions continue to uphold the dignity, discipline, and proud traditions of Richmond College.
